Meredythe Glass has been volunteering at the Mercer Island Thrift Shop for 12 years. With a friendly smile, she greets every bargain hunter who walks through the doors. Little do they know that 80 years ago she was an extra on the set of The Wizard of Oz. She remembers fondly Judy Garland singing, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Now, at the age of 98, she attributes her longevity to having somewhere to go and something meaningful to do. Her heart for and courage to continue living an active and vibrant life are evident and an inspiration to all who meet her.

In 2018, 128 volunteers between the ages of 14 and 98 gave 13,105 hours of their time at MITS, an average of a little more than 10 hours per month. The types of volunteer jobs are varied including greeting customers, cashiering, sales floor coverage, processing donated goods, and staging the sales floor. We also put to use the special talents which experienced volunteers bring including store development and administrative help.

To bolster the success of this local nonprofit, the Mercer Island Thrift Shop could use your help. The store managers, Suzanne Philen and Logan Ens are ready to set up a time to give you a tour and explore how you might find a great fit at MITS. To contact them, call the store at 206-275-7760. All proceeds support the department of Mercer Island Youth & Family Services.
